About Us

Our Mission

Our mission is to strengthen the LGBTQ community of New Mexico through programs and partnerships that serve at-risk sectors of the LGBTQ population.

History

The organization known as Common Bond was incorporated in 1981 with the mission of building an LGBT community in Albuquerque.

At the time, LGBT organizations were considered “social” organizations and were not granted 501(c)3 tax-exempt status.  The organization could only attain 501(c)6 status that “provides for the exemption of business leagues, chambers of commerce, real estate boards, boards of trade and professional football leagues, which are not organized for profit.”[1]

In order to raise funds in a tax-exempt fashion, the Common Bond Educational Fund was incorporated in 1984 and did successfully attain 501(c)3 tax-exempt status.  The Common Bond Educational Fund was administered entirely by Common Bond Inc., and funded all of the original programs of Common Bond.

The organization operated in this fashion until 2005 when both organizations merged into the Common Bond Educational Fund and was renamed the Common Bond New Mexico Foundation.[2]  The new foundation was granted 501(c)3 tax-exempt status in 2005.[3]

Many of the programs that serve the LGBT community of Albuquerque today were initially funded by Common Bond.  Such programs include the Gay Men’s Chorus, the LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and Albuquerque PRIDE.

Over the years, Common Bond has acquired programs begun by other organizations.  Currently Common Bond has three programs: Under 21, Emergency Project, and SAGE.  Check out our annual report here.
